PostePay, one of Italy’s largest electronic money institutions and a core component of the Poste Italiane Group, sought to accelerate its transformation from traditional payments into next-generation, instant digital services. To support over 14 million accounts and meet evolving regulatory demands in Europe (including PSD2), PostePay partnered with Volante Technologies to build a resilient, scalable, and extensible payments platform. Through this collaboration, PostePay enhanced its infrastructure, enabled new rails, and positioned itself for sustained innovation.
About PostePay / Post Italiane
PostePay is a wholly owned subsidiary of Poste Italiane, Italy’s national postal operator, and one of the country’s most prominent electronic money institutions. Originally launched in 2003, PostePay has grown to become a key player in Italy’s retail payments ecosystem, offering prepaid cards, digital wallets, IBAN-enabled accounts, and app-based services.
Through PostePay, consumers can pay bills, transfer funds, shop online, and access a wide range of services—even without a traditional bank account. The company supports approximately 30 million cards and 11 million digital wallets, and processes billions of transactions each year.
PostePay’s reach is amplified by the nationwide footprint of its parent company, Poste Italiane, which operates across postal, logistics, insurance, and financial services. With one of Europe’s largest physical and digital distribution networks, Poste Italiane is leveraging PostePay as a key enabler of its digital transformation strategy and Italy’s broader move toward cashless payments.
The challenges PostePay faced
As digital payments adoption accelerated across Europe, PostePay needed an architecture that could support modern, real-time flows and open banking expectations. Its legacy infrastructure was not natively built for new instantaneous rails. PostePay’s ambitions also included integrating with interbank networks and expanding interoperability—tasks that legacy systems would find difficult to support without risk of disruption. The institution also needed a future‑proof platform that would be extensible, resilient, and capable of evolving under changing regulations and market demands.
How Volante helped
Volante Technologies delivered its Volante Payments Platform, a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture, to support PostePay’s ambitions. This modern infrastructure allowed PostePay to support present and future payment rails, both inside and outside the cloud, with high resilience and flexibility. The solution included full support for instant payment capabilities, modular components, and a scalable, end-to-end payments processing core.
One of our objectives was to find a partner with whom we could develop common roadmaps for our payment hub, rather than simply outsource to a vendor for the SCT INST project. The fact that the platform is cloud-native proved particularly attractive.

Setting a new benchmark in real-time payments
PostePay’s deployment of the Volante Payments Platform enabled the institution to support its more than 14 million accounts with next-generation instant payments, bridging digital and interbank networks. The modern architecture allows innovation in customer experience and services by enabling agility and extensibility.
14 million accounts are now supported under Volante’s enhanced payments infrastructure.
Building a foundation for ongoing innovation and scale
With the new infrastructure in place, PostePay is now positioned to introduce new functional modules—such as QR code payments, richer analytics, open banking extensions, and additional interbank rails. The solution’s modular, cloud-native architecture gives PostePay the agility to evolve alongside regulatory requirements, adopt future standards, and deliver enhanced payment experiences across Italy and potentially beyond.
The Volante difference
Volante Technologies provided a future-ready platform that balanced performance, resilience, and flexibility. Its microservices and cloud-native approach enabled PostePay to modernize without wholesale disruption and to deploy innovative features more quickly. By working closely with PostePay to embed extensibility, Volante helped turn a payments modernization program into a strategic differentiator—empowering PostePay to lead Italy’s digital payments transformation.
