Payments modernization continues to accelerate rapidly across the global financial sector, and as banks ramp up their efforts to keep pace with a wide range of new and evolving market trends, many are finding that the strategic integration of advanced payment hub platforms has become increasingly urgent and all but essential in today’s fiercely competitive ecosystem.

Fortunately, 2026 also marks the first year that expert researchers at Gartner have leveraged their “Magic Quadrant” formula to assist banks and their CIOs in choosing a vendor that meets their highly individualized goals and payment processing requirements. More specifically, Gartner research is stated to serve as “global banking payment hub platforms based on market position and strategies aligned with crucial trends such as composable architecture, ISO 20022, real-time processing and AI,” resulting in the designation of evaluated providers into four categories: Leaders, Challengers, Niche Players, and Visionaries.

In the first of this two-part blog, we’ll give a brief overview of Gartner Magic Quadrant evaluation criteria before offering our reflections on Volante’s inclusion in the report and recognition as a Leader in today’s evolving and competitive global landscape of advanced payments solution providers.

Gartner Magic Quadrant: Banking Payment Hub evaluation criteria

We feel Gartner Magic Quadrant relies on an extensive range of evaluation criteria,“[reflecting] the requirements of financial services institutions for banking payment hub platforms” and “informed by the evolving payments market,” with scores being calculated and represented based on the two core axes of “Ability to Execute” and “Completeness of Vision.”

Regarding the Ability to Execute axis, researchers focused on “the ability of a vendor to deliver scheme-compliant payment processing, and on how the vendor and product are positioned to sustain support for near-term banking payment hub market requirements and commitments,” from our understanding, with each vendor being analyzed and mapped around 60 criteria across the broader categories of product and service, overall viability, sales execution and pricing, market responsiveness and track record, marketing execution, customer experience, and operations.

For Completeness of Vision, Gartner looked at “the effectiveness of the vendor product strategies linked to the market. Gartner has analyzed and compared 54 variables for each vendor’s product to map the vendors based on their Completeness of Vision.

In terms of the evaluation process itself, Gartner states it has “formally and extensively surveyed the vendors about their payment hubs,” in addition to which “vendor briefings were conducted, a recorded demo of [each] system was reviewed, and a survey of customers was conducted.”

Volante One of Seven Payment Platforms Included in this Year’s ‘Leader’ Quadrant

Based on the stated evaluation criteria, and as depicted in the graphic above, Gartner Magic Quadrant recognized Volante as one of only seven Leaders in the global banking payments hub space today. In addition to considering the recent introduction of AI-powered tools into their payment hubs, platforms occupying the Leader Quadrant have been defined in part by the report’s authors as the following:

“Leaders in the banking payment hub platform market have a strong understanding of the requirements of the banking payment market. They have products that are able to support the complexities of different payment schemes in the payment market, while at the same time providing a resilient payment hub that will support the requirements of 24/7 real-time payments.

They are typically ISO 20022-native and have taken advantage of the ISO 20022 message format to provide added value by introducing low-code/no-code payment message formatting. In addition, they are able to use the structured message format to derive value from the messages. This can be from the use of structured data to improve fraud and sanctions checking, or to store the transactions in a format to provide extra value from the payment data.”

Exclusively in accordance with our own goals and strategic outlook, we view our inclusion in the Leader quadrant as an incredibly strong result and testament to the continued strength of our expertise and consistently advancing capabilities associated with the Volante Payments Platform. Over the years, we’ve been careful to align our payments products and services not only with the needs of our banking customers but alongside evolving market trends and accelerating breakthroughs in financial technology, efforts we believe are accurately reflected in our high positioning on the axis of Ability to Execute, as well as Gartner identification of Volante’s unique strengths as a banking payments hub vendor.

Of course, while Volante is pleased with the result of this analysis, as well as the internal confidence we continue to have around our broader positioning in the global banking payments hub market, there is also always additional room for growth and improvement, much of which is being created constantly from the formation and evolution of key market trends and rapid advancement of AI tools and similar breakthroughs in payments technology.

In the next edition of this two-part blog series, we believe we’ll embark on a deeper exploration into Gartner 2026 Magic Quadrant report, providing important additional context and highlighting some of the most prominent trends impacting the evaluation of banking payment hub vendors today.
