Frequently Asked Questions

Payments as a service (PaaS) is a cloud-based delivery model that enables banks and other financial institutions to process and manage payments using third-party platforms and specialized payment services.

PaaS works in much the same way as any other “as a service” model. Payments as a service providers host applications and data on their own servers, databases, and cloud using their own technology stack and networking and computing resources. They then make those applications and data available to financial institutions over the internet through a cloud-based delivery model.

Payments as a service is actually more secure than traditional infrastructure. Cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud spend billions every year on security — far more than any bank can.

Volante’s Payments as a Service is backed by leading data security, cloud security, information security, and privacy management certifications, including PCI DSS, SOC 1, SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, and ISO 27701.

Payments as a service reduces costs in a few key ways:

  • You no longer need to pay for infrastructure up front, converting it from a capital expenditure into an operating expenditure.
  • Your payments as a service provider assumes responsibility for compliance and security.
  • You only pay for what you need. For example, rather than pay for a dedicated infrastructure for peak processing times that is then idle during low volume periods, your provider takes care of scaling up and out for you based on your needs.
